Categories on Nature (more to follow) reflects on different philosophical and anthropological approaches in conceptualizing nature and human in nature. In Western traditional concepts, the thinker and her position in nature have to be defined, making out perceptions and imaginations.

Thinking is a process of categorization and judgments tracked mainly in written language. Archives are hereby architectures of collection and control. The text combination is playing with referring and differing issues which never reach original meaning; reflecting on dependencies between perception and structuring thinking.
The work Categories on Nature (more to follow) consists of 370 paper sheets and is to be hanged on a wall. To see and understand easier the structure of this work, I made a video.

Thanks to Roger Colombik for his idea to show the work in a video.

Book and archive as a thinking architectures

Categories on Nature (more to follow) is based on the idea of a book as an important tool in Western thinking and archiving. Therefore, the book model is composed of 370 sheets with combinations of diverse philosophical texts and a black line code created by the artist. Furthermore, this volume contains illustrations of nature and it has a classical page structure with headers and chapters.

Though the text combinations build structures whereby the readability gets lost, the header text, taken from one of the first botany books we know, The Book of Plants by the Arab Al Dirawani, is well readable and in alphabetical order. So is the header text of the illustrations out of Jaques Derrida: Archive Fever, A Freudian Impression. The other texts are by Giordano Bruno: Cause, Principle and Unity and Essays on Magic; Claude Levi Strauss: Savage Mind; Giorgio Agamben: The Open: Man and Animal; Immanuel Kant: Critique of Pure Reason; Jaques Derrida: The Animal That Therefore I am

Thinking is a process of categorization and judgments tracked mainly in written language. Archives are hereby architectures of collection and control. The text combination is playing with referring and differing issues that never reach their original meaning; reflecting on dependencies between perception and structuring thinking.

This work is part of the Commutecture project.

Here is one possibility of exhibition disposition as it was not allowed to hang works on the walls of the antique building. The work concept foresees that the single prints are framed and hung on a wall.

This work was shown first at the group exhibition Mirabilium Archiva, a project by Giorgia Gastaldon for Palinsesti in 2017. An exhibition sustained by the Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia; City of San Vito al Tagliamento. And under the patronage of and in collaboration with the University of Udine, The voluntary group for the culture of San Vito al Tagliamento, Foundation Aldo Furlan, I.S.I.S. “Paolo Sarpa” of San Vito al Tagliamento, A.S.D.
